Virginia City lies in extreme western Nevada nestled on the eastern slopes of the Virginia Range in the shadow of Mount Davidson. Keep an eye out for wild horses as you traverse the mountain road. Pause at the scenic overlook halfway up the Geiger Grade route through parts of the Toiyabe Forest to view the eastern Sierras, Washoe Valley, and Mount Rose. From the Carson City side you will pass through Devil’s Gate at Silver City, past Gold Hill and the Virginia and Truckee Railroad tracks to enter Virginia City from the south.

From Carson City
If you are driving from Carson City, which is southwest, you would travel east on Highway 50. Go through Mound House and watch for the signs to Virginia City. You will turn left on Highway 341 traveling north. If you arrive in Dayton, you have gone too far. Once your are on Highway 341 you will go through Silver City (slowly) then up past an open pit mine, through Gold Hill and over the Divide. As you come down the hill into Virginia City watch for the Fourth Ward School on the right, you will need to turn right on Occidental Grade just before the school. Drive approximately 200 yards and you will see a sign for the mine; turn left on “F” Street. Go another 100 yards watching for the sign for the Chollar Mine on the right and turn down the driveway.
From Reno or North Shore Tahoe
If you are driving up from Reno, which is north, you travel south on Highway 580 (also known as Highway 395) going south to Highway 342; watch for the signs. Once on Highway 342 (aka Geiger Grade) you will travel 12 miles up the mountain to Virginia City. When you arrive in town you will drive straight through town to the south end watching for the Fourth Ward School on the left. Turn left just beyond the school on Occidental Grade. Follow the road for 200 yards, turn left on “F” Street at the signs. Go 100 more yards to the top of the driveway marked Chollar Mine.
